2009-10 Season Overview
Last updated 9-10-09
The Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra will present a four-concert series at Shryock Auditorium for the 2009-10 season, all on Tuesday nights at 7:30pm. Ticket information is available by calling 453-6000. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $6 for students of all ages, except for the “Eroica Trio” concert, which is $35 and $10.
The September 22 “Stars of Altgeld” performance features three winners of the annual School of Music Solo Competition, and also includes works by Felix Mendelssohn, born 200 years ago. The major work is Mendelssohn’s 5th Symphony, subtitled “Reformation,” for its use of the Martin Luther chorale, “Ein feste burg” in the symphony’s finale.
On November 10, the orchestra commemorates Veterans Day with a unique program of American music. The major work is the Romantic era Piano Concerto by Edward MacDowell, featuring SIUC Piano Professor, Junghwa Lee. The first half of the program includes three pieces, beginning with “Toward the Splendid City” by Richard Danielpour, one of America’s most important living composers. Written for the New York Philharmonic and inspired by New York City and the Beatles, the music is a tour de force for the orchestra’s brass and percussion. The next piece is by SIU Distinguished Alum, Glen Daum, an internationally recognized composer of music for television and film. His “Sentinels of Freedom” was commissioned for a traveling display of the Bill of Rights. The music will accompany Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan narrating these 10 Amendments to the Constitution. The first half of the program concludes with excerpts from Ferde Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite, including the well-know section, “On the Trail.”
The Spring 2010 performances begin with an orchestral pops concert on March 2 featuring the group, “Poor People of Paris.” This St. Louis based ensemble specializes in popular French music, including songs made famous by Edith Piaf. The season concludes on April 13 with an appearance by the world famous “Eroica Trio.” The most sought-after piano trio in the world, the grammy-nominated Eroica Trio thrills audiences with flawless technical virtuosity, irresistible enthusiasm and sensual elegance. They perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto on a program that also includes Hector Berlioz’ “Harold in Italy.” This unusual four-movement showpiece for solo viola and orchestra features our new viola professor, Aurelien Petillot.
